Teaching Math with Data Games

Most of our 21st century learning are using problem solving strategies when gaming. The Data Game Project is taping into the mind set to teach the students math concepts and math problem solving skills while the student compete in computer games. The Data Game Project website gives a quick overview of the project and how it can be used in the classroom through video and example curriculum materials.

The basic instruction framework for teaching mathematics through games is, students play the game and produce data, they model to the data with built-in math modeling tools to create a gaming strategy that they then use to play the game more successfully. Through this project students can explore algebra, probability, statistics, and geometry. Some methods of using this in the classroom would be to have them work on mastering a game as an on-going project or it could be an activity for multiple days in-class. The most important aspect of using this these games would be to require and support creating the best possible gaming strategy through mathematical modeling.
