Dance Your Way to the Top CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.LE.A.2

Figure from experiment 1 from Real-World Math with Vernier

Students day do not like to just sit around and learn about math. During a regular math lesson, students get bored and do not want to do a worksheet when they had been sitting in their desk the whole period. To change this up we as teacher need to come up with kinesthetic learning. Now a days most students are a mix kinesthetic learner and something else, which mean they need to move to learn the best. In this activity dance your way to the top, students will be using Venier technology in order to create linear, quadratic, and exponential equations. The goal of this activity is for students to “dance” (walk) and make linear, quadratic, and exponential equations using Vernier CBR 2 motion detectors. This will be a group activity about 3-4 people per group.

For this activity teacher will need:

  • Vernier CBR 2 motion detectors one per group ($99 each)Product image for Calculator-Based Ranger 2
  • TI-84 Plus, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, TI-Nspire or TI-Nspire CAS one per group

  • iPad or other table

For this activity the group will need to follow the worksheet. On this worksheet, students will be asked to make linear, quadratic, and exponential equations while walk using Vernier CBR 2 motion detectors. They will need to write direction on how the person walking did it and must take a picture on their iPad or tablet of the calculator to prove that they create the equation they did. If you do not have access to iPad or tablet you as a teacher can walk around a check them off for making each equation. This activity is made to help students better understand linear, quadratic, and exponential equations.
