This is a picture of a grain silo. Using this picture, or a picture similar, students can model the volume and the surface area of the silo.

A silo is a structure for the bulk storage of grain, coal, cement, carbon black, woodchips, food products, and sawdust. A wooden and upright filled with grain was the first modern silo, invented and built in 1873 at McHenery County, Illinois. They can be dated as far back as the late 8th century BC used in ancient Greece.

Silos are now built in different types of materials and sizes. They are mostly used for agriculture products. In a farming community knowing how to measure the different storages for agriculture products can be used in real life to know how much a certain silo can hold.
